Computer Hardware Problems
Computer hardware problems are one of the most common headaches faced by computer owners. For people who perform regular maintenance on their systems, the only reason they run into problems is if they run into computer hardware problems. What is ironic about computer hardware problems is that they are usually the easier kind of problems to solve (as opposed to problems with your software). Of course, symptoms displayed by computer hardware problems are often much more stressful than the simple “you need to update” messages displayed by software. Who hasn’t been stricken with fear when a piece of computer hardware fails to function? After all it isn’t as if the stuff is exactly affordable should it need to be replaced.
Before you panic and run out to replace your computer hardware, first you need to do some basic troubleshooting. It sounds dumb but have you checked to make sure that all of the cables are plugged in? Are all of the switches in the correct positions? Are the cable connections secured? You would be amazed at what can be solved by a little bit of cable jiggling. Make sure that all of the pins and parts are installed correctly.
If that doesn’t seem to work, try to install the hardware again. Whether it is a new printer or a new hard drive, go back through the process step by tiny step. Start over from the very beginning. This means physically taking the part and all of its components all the way out and then reinstalling them as if you had just taken everything out of the box.
Sometimes a piece of hardware won’t work because it just isn’t compatible with the rest of your system. Check the system requirements on the box to make sure that it will work properly with the rest of the installed hardware on your system. One major headache comes from installing one new component which will render an older piece of hardware either mute or cause some malfunctions.
Check your drivers. Almost every single piece of hardware that is installed inside your CPU or connected to it externally is run by some sort of driver. Make sure that all of the driver software is installed correctly. Another place to check to make sure everything is running the way it should is your device manager.
Some older forms of Microsoft Windows have a built in device manager. Simply locate the device manager in your computer and open it up. From there, you will learn which pieces of hardware need to be worked on. Usually the best course of action if something comes up as needing service is to simply remove it from the system and then reinstall it. It is amazing what a simple re-installation can do for your computer hardware problems.
Computer hardware problems can often be scary and infuriating. After all, computer systems and hardware do not come cheaply. You want everything to work perfectly all the time. The good news is that there are steps you can take to make sure your hardware works correctly.
